A bipartisan coalition of lawmakers has announced the formation of the Rural Infrastructure Caucus, a new congressional group dedicated to channeling federal resources toward vital upgrades in underserved communities across the Midwest. The caucus aims to tackle persistent infrastructure gaps affecting rural areas, including broadband internet expansion, access to clean drinking water, and financial support for rural healthcare facilities.
Senator Caroline Bishop (R-IA) and Representative Daniel Wu (D-MN), who serve as co-chairs, emphasized that the initiative centers on “fairness and economic opportunity” for rural Americans often left behind by urban-focused policies.
The caucus is currently drafting a comprehensive $12 billion infrastructure proposal slated for introduction during the upcoming legislative session this fall. The plan prioritizes:
- Broadband expansion projects to bridge the digital divide, enabling education, telehealth, and business growth.
- Upgrades and repairs to water systems, addressing contamination issues and improving water quality.
- Funding for rural hospitals and clinics to maintain essential healthcare services amid widespread facility closures.
Farmers’ associations, rural chambers of commerce, and small business groups have voiced strong support, highlighting the potential economic revitalization and improved quality of life the caucus seeks to deliver.
