How Genevieve Collins Approaches Community Education in Texas

Genevieve Collins and Americans for Prosperity–Texas are focused on helping individuals better understand local issues, community resources, and civic processes through educational outreach and public engagement initiatives.

The role of local policies and civic systems in everyday life can often feel complicated or difficult to navigate. Many people may not fully understand how decisions surrounding property taxes, local spending, or community initiatives affect their daily lives and long-term financial planning. As a result, organizations focused on public education and community engagement have increasingly worked to make these topics more accessible and easier to understand.

As the Texas Director of Americans for Prosperity (AFP), Genevieve Collins focuses on connecting people with educational resources and helping communities better understand topics that may impact their finances and neighborhoods. Her work centers largely on outreach, public education, and encouraging informed community participation through local events and discussions.

Who Is Genevieve Collins?

Genevieve is a seventh-generation Texan whose family has been integral to Texas law for decades. Her grandmother, Calvert Keoun Collins, was elected to the Dallas City Council in 1957. She believed deeply in civic responsibility and community involvement, and Genevieve now prides herself on carrying that legacy forward into her work today. “She taught me that strong women dream big,” Genevieve says. “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

Prior to becoming the Texas Director of AFP, Genevieve’s background was in education and business, where she spent over a decade helping grow an education technology company. That experience shaped her focus on outcomes, transparency, and accountability, all of which are principles she now applies to helping Texans better understand issues like property taxes, appraisals, local spending, and economic growth.

What Is AFP?

Americans for Prosperity is a nonprofit grassroots organization, and its Texas initiatives include educational events and informational outreach programs designed to help residents better understand local processes and financial topics that may affect their communities. AFP-Texas specializes in connecting people with policy. The organization works to make complex policy issues more real and personal for everyday people to help them better connect with government.

Right now, Genevieve and her team are leading a statewide property tax education tour, hosting community events across Texas to explain how property taxes are calculated, how appraisals may impact tax bills, and what recent reforms could mean for homeowners.

The organization also provides informational sessions focused on topics such as bond elections and annual property appraisals, helping attendees better understand how these processes work and how they may influence long-term community planning and household costs. The emphasis throughout these efforts is on accessibility, clarity, and public education.

Overcoming Obstacles

One of the biggest challenges in Genevieve’s position is helping people navigate systems that can often feel confusing or overwhelming. For many Texans, engaging with these subjects can result in frustration or uncertainty. To help address this, the organization focuses heavily on simplifying information and creating approachable educational resources for community members.

As Genevieve says, “At the end of the day, knowledge is power, and when people are informed, they’re better equipped to participate in the process and advocate for their communities.”
